Local racers do well in national competition

Local orienteers competed at the British Sprint and Middle Distance Championships last weekend.

The sprint race was held on the York University campus and comprised of a heat in the morning and a final in the afternoon.

The racing was fast and runners had to make quick decisions as they navigated around the university’s urban environment.

Bassetlaw’s results in the sprint races: Will Parkinson 2nd M16, Helen Parkinson 7th W45, Paul Beresford 9th M45, Robert Parkinson 17th M55 and Ben Beresford 51st Men’s Open.

On Sunday the middle distance race was held at Strensall Common, near York.

This time the courses were longer and set out on the local heath land.

For a time it looked like Tom Cooley would get onto the podium in third place in the M10 race but as the last runners came through the finish he was just pushed into fourth.

Results: Tom Cooley 4th M10, Ben Beresford 14th M18, Will Parkinson 26th M16, Paul Beresford 27th M45, Eleanor Cooley 23rd W14.

The Easter weekend sees local orienteers in Scotland for the annual JK International Festival.

This lasts for four days and includes an urban race, two individual days and a relay.
