Local tackle best

If you are lucky enough to be on the receiving end of some nice new kit, can we urge you to purchase it from any of the local tackle shops rather than shopping online.

While the internet may on occasion be slightly cheaper there are many reasons to buy your gear locally, first and foremost is the excellent after sales service provided and also the opportunity to actually get a feel by personally handling your prospective purchase and receiving expert advice from the ever helpful staff.

There are also additional long term bonuses, mainly that we are fortunate enough to have dealers who offer support to angling locally, sponsoring junior and senior matches and leagues.

Following our coastal reports in recent columns it was nice to hear that carp enthusiast John Nicholson of Bircotes visited Hornsea north beach last week to try his hand at beachcasting under the watchful eye of veteran sea angler Graham Cashmore.

Unfortunately the massive shoals of whiting that had been prevalent over the previous couple of weeks had moved offshore, and their efforts were rewarded with only a few small pin whiting.

It was a similar story further up the coast for the Stanley Street SAC crew who fished Bridlington.

On a brighter note despite the poor returns John really enjoyed trying his hand at this discipline and will be giving it another try.

A reminder that from 1st December Toft Newton Trout Fishery will open at 8am.

From then until the close there will be a reduction in ticket prices plus boat hire will be totally free.

There is a catch and release policy and tickets are priced at just £10 with a two fish ticket at £12 (no OAP discounts available on these prices).

Four and six fish permits remain the same.

COMMERCIAL ROUND-UP

STARTING at Riverside near Bawtry, Mick Hall kept up his good run of form in Tuesday’s open winning with 25lb 10oz on peg 32 taken on pole and pellet.

On Wednesday Mark Cordell triumphed fishing the feeder with a worm hookbait for 10lb 6oz.

Friday saw the ever popular Terry Pixley fishing the maggot feeder on peg 8 to put together a winning net of 24lb 5oz.

Lee Hasset was second with 23lb 4oz on peg 43 pole fishing pellet and Chris Line third with a level 21lb on peg 34.

On Saturday John Bleakley employed the feeder with a sweet corn hook bait to nail down a win on peg 35 with 113lb 6oz.

Down the road at Lodge Farm Gavin Tomlinson led the way in Tuesday’s open on the signal poind with a net of 44lb 11oz taken on pole fished pellet on peg 30.

Jason Swift was second on peg 11 with 44lb 3oz on pole and corn.

In Wednesday’s over 50s event on the long island venue regular John Moore landed 42lb 1oz on peg 98 pole fishing pellet with Mick Simpson claiming the runners-up spot bomb fishing pellet on peg 100 for 29lb 2oz.

Thursday’s competition on the field pond was won by Jack Locket bomb fishing meat for 36lb 13oz from peg 3 with Roger Healey in second spot on next peg 2 fishing the pellet feeder for 30lb 10oz.

In Saturday’s contest Steve Whiley managed 24lb 8oz on peg 11 fishing the method feeder to beat Garry Mumby who pole fished pellet for 20lb 3oz from peg 26.

Tomorrow (Saturday’s) open is to be competed on the field with a 9am draw at the café with a £15 entry fee.

At Lakeside Colin Mitchell ran out the winner in Wednesday’s open with a net of ide and skimmers weighing 42lb 11oz from peg 14.

Craig Parsimmon was second on peg 13 with 27lb 1oz.

In Saturday’s team of four John Powell employed the maggot feeder on peg 4 for 25lb 9oz of carp and ide, with the in-form Colin Mitchell in second on peg 5 with 25lb 1oz.

In Sunday’s Woodsetts winter league the maggot feeder reigned supreme with Neil Johnson putting together a winning net of ide weighing 40lb 10oz from peg 32.

Mark White was second on peg 10 with 38lb 8oz.

On the trout pond Ian Hellywell slipped his landing net under 14 fish to 8lb on his various damsels or green Montana cast on sinking line.
