Having won 21-14 against a North Cambridgeshire rink in the first round, the Louth ladies had an even better 21-7 victory over North Essex team.

But in the last four they were overcome 26-8 by a Derbyshire trio who went on to win the final 23-8.

Also at Newark were Harry Putland and Tony Musson who were unlucky to go out at the first stage of the men’s pairs, 17-16, to a Humberside duo.

The Louth pair had led 16-12, but were pegged back and the outcome was decided on an extra end.

* At club level the final matches of the winter league season were played.

The battle for the runners-up spot in Division Two of the Evening Triples was won by Badgers whose 19-14 victory over Travellers put them out of reach of Stags who lost 15-8 to table-toppers Fast Shippers.

* The club knockout finals began on Saturday with some good bowling and closely-contested games.

Simon Reeson found a rich vein of form late on to beat Chris Hanslip 21-16 to win the men’s singles, while Russ Dent won the open sets singles with a 7-5 and 11-4 victory over Horace Cope.

The ladies’ pairs proved a close battle with the score at 11-each after 11 ends before Val Sherry and Sue Page moved up a gear to beat Liz Draper and Carol Smith 30-12.
