Louth Fencing Club medal tally hits 20

Most recently three Louth fencers took part in the Durham round of the Leon Paul Series last month with amazing results.

Joe Blair won bronze in the under 13s age group, while in the under 15s, William Lonsdale claimed the gold and Sam Blair the silver, having knocked out two of Durham’s top fencers.

In March, a club record turnout of 13 fencers travelled to Sheffield for the Yorkshire Youth Championships and returned with 10 medals.

Nine of the group also qualified to represent the region at the British Championships.

Results – Under 10s: Nick Freitas 3rd, Under 12s: Joe Blair 1st. Under 14s: Sam Blair 1st, Robert Kemp 2nd, Alex Judge/William Lonsdale =3rd. Under 16s: Archie Broughton 3rd. Under 18 girls: Emily Goolden 2nd, Abbie Johnson 3rd. Under 18 boys: Connor Webster 3rd.

And the Yorkshire Senior and Under 14s Foil at York in February brought an excellent turnout of 12 Louth fencers.

In the under 14s section, Joe Blair won gold, Wilf Broughton took the silver, and Alex Judge completed the clean sweep for Louth with bronze.

In the senior section, Sam Brougham and William Lonsdale finished joint 3rd, an excellent result for William in his first senior competition.

The women had a good day, too, with Emily Goolden winning silver and Paula Webster securing the bronze.

Jim Harris, who coaches at Louth with wife Kate, said: “These results are well deserved as all our fencers work hard and travel all over to competitions.

“To have won 20 medals this year is outstanding.”
