Louth Indoor Bowls Club: Waltham close in on leaders JCB

Two wins saw Waltham firmly established in second spot in the Wednesday/Thursday Morning Triples League and cut the gap to the leaders to five points.

They comfortably defeated third-placed Kingfishers 25-7 and then did just enough to win 15-10 against Pips.

Leaders JCB had a tough time against Kingfishers, but edged an 11-10 victory, but were then beaten 14-10 by Crackerbarrels.

Sturgeons could have pinched third spot, but were outplayed by Square Pegs who won 20-5. Pegs in turn could then have nicked fourth spot themselves from Sturgeons, but were also outplayed by Pips, 19-10.

Bottom team Webbos appear doomed to relegation after losing 19-7 to Crackerbarrels, but did scrape a 10-10 draw with next-bottom Castaways to keep the deficit at seven points.

* There was a change at the top of Division Two where Sleepwalkers were a player short for their game against bottom team Scorpions and suffered a 15-9 defeat.

This allowed Backwoodsmen to take top spot by one point, with a game in hand, after a 23-9 win over Saints. Sleepwalkers could have slipped to third, but Fledglings lost the chance to add to the mix when losing 16-5 to Louth.

* Another divisional winner was confirmed when Dodgers became champions of Division Two of the Afternoon Triples League despite being held to a 12-12 draw by Try Hards.

The table-toppers went 21 points clear with nine games to play. The battle is on for runners-up spot with just two points separating four teams.

* In the Ladies Triples, Flyers increased their lead at the top to three points with a 16-6 win against Woodentops, while second-placed Follies were held to a 11-11 draw by Keddies.

The next two teams are both a further three points back. Canaries had a comfortable 20-5 win over Bunnies which moved them into third spot by virtue of a slightly better shots difference ahead of Anglers who beat Jayees 16-8.

* Club members Harry Putland and Tony Musson have reached the national finals of the EBF men’s pairs and will contest the play-offs at Newark next month.

* The Roving Jack singles competition, held on Saturday, was won by Jonathan Darley who played some excellent bowls to beat Ian Bertram in the final.

Participants played in two groups with each person playing three games. The top two in each group then progressed to the semi-finals where the losers were Patrick O’Mahony and Simon Reeson.
