Market Rasen Racecourse: Preview and tips for Wednesday’s seven-race meeting

Racing is back at Market Rasen Racecourse this Wednesday with a seven-race card, consisting of three hurdle races, three steeplechases and a bumper.

We begin with a novices’ hurdle run over an extended two miles (12.20). The Skelton team will be hoping for better from Quaviste, who won a bumper last term and didn’t totally disgrace himself when last seen in a novice hurdle, but others still look better. Abbey Scope’s winning bumper form is working out reasonably well and he could be a big player here.
Next is a two and a half mile novices’ handicap hurdle (12.50). Philip Kirby’s Devon Skies seeks a hat-trick, having won his last two starts by a combined distance of 19 lengths, and he might be competitive once again. Tees Comp’s Clive could be down to a workable mark now, so might be worth considering for a place, as could Henry Daly’s After Many Days.
Race three is a novices’ handicap chase run over two and three quarter miles (1.20). We have another hat-trick seeker here in the shape of Mickey Bowen’s Sir Carnegie, who won his last two starts at Newcastle and Kelso, but his new mark looks potentially hard to win off. Laura Morgan’s horses are going very well at present and her new recruit Kapamazov could be at a workable mark here.
The fourth race is a handicap hurdle run over two miles and seven furlongs (1.55). Mark Walford’s Johnson’s Blue is the topweight, making his reappearance today under Tom Midgley, who gives him three pounds. This horse goes well fresh and could be involved, but might be vulnerable to those who are already race fit in a race of this class. Olly Murphy’s Secret Trix could be a player, while Rebecca Menzies’ Lihyan - a course and distance winner - should be able to run a big race, also under a claiming rider, having placed last time in a similar race.
Next is the feature race, the Listed three-mile Booth Mares’ Chase (2.25). The best on ratings is Faye Bramley’s Paggane, who won a Listed mares’ chase last time out at Carlisle. She is a proven stayer so might take all the beating, but nine-year-old Marsh Wren will not let her past without a fight. The older horse might have the advantage if the ground gets any softer, but with a dry forecast, the younger could be the one to side with.
The penultimate race is a three-mile handicap chase (2.55). Hawkseye View could be at a winnable mark now, as could Midnight Gold who is the more proven stayer of the two. Billy Aprahamian’s Seasmoke is a consistent sort who ought to be involved too, but may need to come further down the handicap to win.
A bumper concludes the afternoon’s racing (3.25). Just two of the five runners have raced before, both in point-to-points. Dan Skelton’s Hidden Fortune was the better pointer of the two, winning his maiden by five lengths, and he should be the leading chance here today. Olly Murphy’s newcomer, Moore Brion, though, is worth a look, related to some smart types and representing a stable in good form.
