MOTOR RACING: Caythorpe racer continues bid for GT Championship title

Caythorpe racer Shaun Balfe heads for Italy this weekend for the penultimate event in the International GT Open Championship at Monza.

Having missed the last round at The Red Bull Ring, regular partner Phil Keen will be back alongside Shaun, sharing the Balfe Motorsport McLaren 650S as they continue their bid for the championship title.

Shaun currently lies in second place, 19 points behind the Lamborghini duo of Crestani and Biagi, who they beat last time out.

“Phil and I raced the Ferrari at Monza last year and got a podium finish, it’s a circuit I like but I will be happier if it’s dry. It’s such a high speed track that things can go wrong in a big way,” Shaun explained.

With four races left, as the championship ends in Catalunya early November, it’s still all to play for.

“We will just go Italy and do what we do. We are not focused just on the title, but take each race individually. We will race hard and seriously to get a result and know it’s going to be close. So we are trying to beat Italian drivers in an Italian car on an Italian circuit; we want an upset,” Shaun concluded.

This weekend’s races can be seen live on Motors TV.
