MOTOR RACING: Historic racing will bring the past back to life at Cadwell Park

Whilst Cadwell Park is renowned for its reputation amongst the biking fraternity, it is also revered by car racers, and regularly hosted British Formula 3 races in its heyday. The Wolds Trophy was originally conceived as a celebration of this category, and although it has grown to encompass other classic classes, there will be races for Historic Formula 3 cars from the mid-to-late-1960s, an era of screaming one-litre engine cars.

The event will also celebrate the other junior single-seater categories that have nurtured many great racing drivers from both Britain and abroad. Formula Junior preceded F3, and introduced the great Jim Clark to the world. Spanning the era when the layout of racing cars fundamentally changed, there will be two grids, one for the older front-engined cars of the late 1950s and the other for the later rear-engined machines of the early 1960s.

Introduced almost 50 years ago, Formula Ford became the training ground for both karting graduates and novice racers, and where the legendary talents of Brazilians Emerson Fittipaldi and Ayrton Senna were developed. Both the original formula and the Formula Ford 2000 spin-off series will be represented at the event, covering a decade from the late 1960s.

GT cars will also be in action at the Wolds Trophy, with two Road Sports categories. Historic Road Sports represents three decades from the immediate post-war period until the late 1960s, an era of fierce development which can be seen from the diverse entry. This ranges from the elegant Jaguar XK120 and Aston Martin DB2 to the beautifully balanced Lotus Elan and bestselling MGB.

70s Road Sports moves on to a time when Britain’s position at the top of the sportscar tree was under threat from foreign rivals. This is reflected in the entries, with cars from Jaguar, Lotus, Triumph and TVR facing opposition from Alfa Romeo, Datsun, Mercedes, Porsche and Ferrari.

The line-up is completed by the hugely-popular Historic Touring Car Championship, which recalls the David and Goliath battles between European classics including the Mini Cooper S, Lotus Cortina and Hillman Imp, and the American muscle cars, such as the Ford Mustang, Falcon and Galaxie trio.

As one of the country’s most picturesque racing venues, Cadwell Park is the ideal environment to see these cars in action. Visitors can also take a closer look at the cars in the paddock whilst savouring the laid back ambience that historic racing offers.
