Bev Johnson hopes to have qualified for this year’s world championships after winning a gold medal at the WPC European Championships earlier this month.

The 51-year-old won her class in the Masters 3 67.5kg lifter, recovering from a poor opener on squat, and two fouls, to secure a personal best on bench, of 45, and deadlift (110). It gave her a total score of 210.

If that wasn’t enough, Bev, from North Thoresby, also discovered her performance has earned her the new British record for her age and weight division.

She was asked to represent Britain at the Europeans, in Stoke-on-Trent, after impressing at the British and Amateur Powerlifting Union Northern Quarter, in Scunthorpe, last February, just four months after taking up the sport.

Bev took up self-defence and kickboxing in September, 2013 and lost more than three stone in weight.

But it was a seminar led by record-breaking powerlifter Andy Bolton last October which inspired her to give it a try for herself.

The AWPC World Powerlifting Championships take place in Russia, in August.
