Engineers were multi talented

An advertisement from White and Co’s (Worksop) Household Almanack of 1905 describes the company as “mechanical and electrical engineers, boiler makers and millwrights.

It was based then at Church Walk Works where the advert proclaims they had opened “a first class showroom” with “all classes of engineers’ goods and electrical fittings kept in stock”.

It also said that repairs were a speciality and invited customers to write in for a special price list.

Telegrams were to be addressed to Flamwell, Worksop, and the phone number was simply 1Y4.

Thomas Flamwell’s many faceted business began life on Canal Road in 1868 and moved to Church Walk in about 1880.

He repaired steam boilers and engines, including locomotives, traction engines, threshing machines and mowers, as well as making and maintaining agricultural machinery and implements.

Mr Flamwell was also a lay preacher at the Primitive Methodist Church and choir master and sunday school superintendent at John Street Zion Chapel.

At one time he was also president of the Free Church Council. He died in 1908.
