Party to celebrate new Queen

THIS week’s Archive Corner photo shows a street party on Baulk Lane, Worksop, to celebrate the accession of Queen Elizabeth to the throne in 1952.

The picture was brought in to us by Guardian reader Arthur Fotheringham.

He is seen second from the right on the middle row sitting next to his fiancee Noelle who became his wife a year later in 1953.

Mr Fotheringham, 81, of Craigston Road, Carlton-in-Lindrick, said: “I remember it well. Everyone on the photo lived on Baulk Lane.”

“We had a marquee put up on the field at the bottom of the gardens and we all brought food to share. There was some music put on later.”

He said there were about 30 houses on the street and about 120 people were at the party.

Mr Fotheringham worked as a driver for Batchelors Foods and has four children. He is also a grandad and great-grandad.

He said that a lot of streets held parties to celebrate the Queen coming to the throne 60 years ago, following the death of her father King George VI.

This year many people will probably be holding similar street parties again to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
