After four months of pandemic-inflicted closure, Boston Squash & Racketball Club was finally able to reopen its doors last Saturday morning, and 20 of the club’s junior players wasted no time in getting their rackets back in hand.

While there are still some social distancing restrictions on exactly how the game can be played, players are now allowed to return to the courts, and it was only fitting that the club’s future stars were the first to use them.

The club's junior programme has been hugely successful in recent years, with attendances at record levels.

The sessions were split into four groups of five players with staggered timings, which ensured that every junior was able to receive one-on-one tips and advice from the club’s two coaches, as well as ensuring the sessions complied with all COVID-19 guidance.

An extensive programme of work has been completed at the Rosebery Avenue club to ensure it is covid-secure.

“Everything was a little bit different at first, but all of the juniors adapted tremendously and quickly took to the new rules – both around hygiene and playing styles,” noted coach Jacky Parsons.

This was echoed by fellow coach Pete Andrews, who noted just how keen every player had been to come back.

“We thought there might be some nervousness at first, but the response from juniors and parents has been overwhelming,” he explained.

"We may have to put on extra sessions to meet demand, but if we have to, we will!"

One of those in attendance was Zak Lowe, who started playing in September.

“I’ve missed the club while it’s been closed, and have really enjoyed being back on court today”, he said.

Many parents also noted how safe and well organised the sessions were.

After a successful opening weekend, junior coaching sessions will now continue throughout the summer on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

All are welcome from ages eight to 16, including complete beginners, though booking is essential in order to help plan safe numbers.
