Speaking in Parliament this afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson explained the four stages that he hopes can see the nation return to something close to the normality we previously experienced with sport.

From March 29, outdoor sport for children and adults will be allowed to resume for the first time since early January.

Outdoor swimming will be included along with other outdoor sporting pursuits, such as tennis and golf.

From April 12, it is hoped indoor leisure facilities, including gyms and pools can once again open.

This will, however, be for the use of individuals or household groups. From May 17, indoor venues may be able to have up to 1,000 spectators or run at half capacity, whichever is lower figure.

For outdoor sports venues, the limit will be 4,000 or half capacity, whichever is lower.

Meanwhile, large outdoor seated venues where crowds can be easily spread, the allowed limit will be 10,000 people or a quarter of the official capacity, whichever figure is lower.

From June 21, large events can resume and mixing rules are expected to be halted.

All stages - to be governed by ‘data not dates’ - are currently spaced five weeks apart; four weeks to allow the Government to test the data from their most recent easing of restrictions and a further week to allow for re-opening preparations.
