High jumper Hannah Moat claims first English title

Hannah Moat has set her sights on representing Great Britain at next year's under 20 European Championships - after being crowned a national champion.

The 17-year-old Queen Elizabeth's High School pupil began her 2020 campaign by winning the under 20s England title.

The event was held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, over the weekend of February 22 and 23, ahead of the current coronavirus pandemic.

In a closely-fought competition, Hannah, was ultimately the only athlete clear at the winning height of 1.75cm.

She then faced three attempts at what would have been a personal best height of 1.80cm, unsuccessfully on this occasion.

“It’s her first national title,” said mum Clare.

“She’s had a few silvers and bronzes before, but it was such a good feeling for Hannah to win after those seconds and thirds.”

Hannah enjoyed a solid winter training programme, including competing early February in Hustopece, Czech Republic, ahead of scooping her English title.

The plan was to compete at this year's World under 20 Championships in Nairobi, but the event - like much of this year's sporting calendar - has fallen foul of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Her long term goal is now to book her place in the Team GB next year.The under 20 European Championships, due to be held in Tallin, Estonia are currently scheduled for July 2021. However, question marks remain over whether that could be replaced by the World Championships following their postponement.

Hannah – who should be taking her A Levels this year – first took up athletics as a 10-year-old, joining local club Scunthorpe AC.

It began recreationally but Hannah soon discovered she had a love and talent for the high jump, aided somewhat by the fact she stands 6 feet 2 inches tall.

The coronavirus may have put a halt to meets for the foreseeable future, but Hannah continues to keep fit at home where she is able to practice her circuits, yoga and U-bend runs.

Hannah is in her second year competing at under 20 level, one of the younger athletes in her age category.
