Linda has a debut to remember at Beckingham Bowls Club

On a rather autumnal Saturday 5 September, Beckingham’s bowlers competed for the Audrey Rogers Memorial Trophy for the Club Triples.

New member Linda Farmery came straight from the hairdressers to team up with Peter Cawthorne and Peter Ness and win the trophy.

Linda had never played in a team match or competition before and supported the two Peters well at number 2.

Peter Ness led exceptionally well and Peter Cawthorne mopped up most ends as Skip.

In their semi-final, they just held off a spirited fightback by Bob Brindle, Stuart Moody and John Foster who pulled back from 16-7 down to finish up losing 16- 15.

In the other semi-final, Carole Booth, Brian Burton & Roger Platts won a competitive match against Tony Whitlam, Mel Moody and Roy Clegg by 11-9.

Moody stepped in at the last minute and equipped herself very well, having not played for several years.

The final was very one-sided with Farmery and the two Peters beating Booth, Burton and Platts 25-5.

Two days earlier, members of the Club’s ground staff met to increase their knowledge on treating bowling greens and discuss the Autumn/Winter work required.

The green will be closed for play from 25 September to allow for verti – cutting and scarifying prior to re-seeding and top dressing.

The club will not hold their Presentation Social Evening due to Covid-19 restrictions, but hope to be able to hold it before the start of the 2020 season – possibly combining it with their Annual Lunch.
