RACELINE: Tip of the day 2nd February

The ground continues to be saturated, but with the Cheltenham Festival only 37 days away, today’s cards carry plenty of significance. Here is our selection:

Saturday 2nd February

MISTER HYDE

Sandown 3.35 WIN

In-form trainer Jonjo O’Neill’s eight-year-old has always possessed talent but has not always looked straightforward, mixing promising efforts with bad ones and developing into one of the yard’s typically inconsistent horses. However, a trip on testing ground, plus the application of a visor to help him concentrate, has brought out the best in him in handicap chases this season. He is almost a stone higher in the weights than when he triumphed at Kempton over Christmas, but he had plenty in hand that day and this is not a strong renewal of the Betfred Masters, a once-great race won in the past by the likes of Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Desert Orchid, Burrough Hill Lad and Bregawn. Victory here for Mister Hyde could set up a tilt at the Grand National.
