Rain makes the trophy a bit of a wet day washout

THE top teams all won comfortably this week in the Gainsborough Standard Bowls League but the Hazel Lawrence Trophy was badly affected by rain.

Last Wednesday all of the Hazel Lawrence matches were cancelled but Owston Ferry re-arranged their match with Scotter 2 for Monday and won easily 79-41. This competition is 10-a-side (singles, pairs, triples, fours).

In the league Marton GB visited Melrose SSC and gave the home team a hard time on three rinks until halfway.

In the second half Melrose took control on three rinks but Marton tenaciously held on to win a rink and restrict Melrose to an 8-2 (82-47) scoreline.

Scotter 1 had an almost identical match at North Wheatley. The visitors won comfortably on three rinks but Wheatley battled all the way to win a fourth rink and restrict Scotter 1 to an 8-2 (96-56) score.

Beckingham visited Misterton and although the home team gave them problems on two rinks, the visitors won easily 10-0 (88-56) to get two points nearer the leaders.

Meanwhile, Misterton are wooden spoon candidates on this form.

Marshalls A beat Marshalls Sports 8-2 (85-61). The aggregate was close over three rinks but the A team rink of Alan Crookes, Tim Kempton and Paul Hinson won 36-9 to settle it.

The A team now look likely to finish above the Sports yet again, although the Sports still look safe for Kelsey Cup qualification.

Rose A found visitors Cottam 2100 just too good for them after a tight match. Cottam won 8-2 (74-61) to just overtake Lincoln Co-op (who had a sit out) and claim sixth place but Owston Ferry look favourites.

The league looks more open this year with three teams contesting the championship and any one of four could finish last.

At the top Beckingham and Melrose have to visit Scotter 1 and although Marshalls A have found their form too late they can still trip up some or all of the championship contenders.

The bottom of the league is the most competitive for years although Scotter 2 should benefit from faster greens from now on.
