Bassetlaw Triathlon Club’s Jo Summers is the East Midlands Triathlon Volunteer of the Year, after playing a lead role in delivering the fledgling club’s first major event.

She started volunteering 18 months ago, and has given her time to local and regional triathlons, duathlons and running events.

Her greatest success came with the inaugural Bassetlaw Sprint Triathlon in August this year, at Worksop Leisure Centre.

She said: “I meet new people and enjoy cheering on the triathletes and offering encouragement whilst undertaking various roles.”

“Organising Bassetlaw’s first triathlon was hard work but so rewarding.”

She hopes that her award and positive experiences will inspire others to get involved in local sport.

““I would like to encourage those with a little free time to offer their services to a group or event,” she said.

“It can be anything from coaching, administration, finance, or marketing.”

“Whatever your strengths are there will be a role.”

Much of the success of the district’s triathlon club has come thanks to the work of the committee members, coaches and officials behind the scenes who have developed a club worthy of the Olympic Legacy.

A club spokesman said: “Sports clubs across Bassetlaw are so reliant on volunteers and we would actively encourage other people to give their time which can help the health and well being of local people of all ages as well as the volunteer themselves.”
