Running man Kevin in comeback victory

GAINSBOROUGH and Morton Striders’ first club race of the year on 8th January saw club secretary Kevin Housham make a stunning comeback to claim victory in the Phil Rose Handicap race, following an injury-plagued 2011.

Mark Hemmings marked his return to competitive action with a very strong second place finish, just 11 seconds behind Housham, swiftly followed by first lady Angela Overson and third man Glenn Peniston who secured PB performances over the course which will be used for the first ever GMS 10k on 4th March.

With one race left in the 12-race series Shaun Boyle tops the table on 98 points closely followed by club chairman Simon Smith on 92 and Matt Lyner on 85. The last event takes place on 22nd January.

Last Sunday (15th January) seven runners took part in the 13.7-mile Ropsley Raid race near Grantham.

First of the Striders home was Tom Humphries in a time of one hour 40 minutes and he was followed by John Granger in 1-55, Paschal Moran and Norman Hindley 1-58, Emma Humphries and Julian Hesp 2-00 and John Catley 2-01.

One interesting fact is that Norman Hindley completed this distance in 2001 in 2-12, but 11 years later he was able to run it 14 minutes quicker!

If you’d like to join The Striders for a training run these cater for every runner from the novice onwards, and take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, including a ladies only session.
