Scotter, who finished on the same number of points as Parish, but scored more tries, will now go on to represent the Gainsborough area at the county finals next year.

The competition was held at Trent Valley Academy, and organiser Gareth Hart from the partnership was delighted with the addition of a new team.

“Last year we had two teams, so to see an increase with a new team is a real positive,” he said.

“With Scotter having support from a Scunthorpe Rugby Club representative and Blyton Cum Laughton supported by a Nottingham Rugby Club representative, the standard was always going to be high.”

“To have the top two teams only separated by one try made it a real close call.”

The tag rugby tournament saw kids involved in non-contact and fast moving games.

Hart added: “It’s suitable for adults or children, and for boys and girls to play together.”

“Its safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and liveliness of the sport, means that tag rugby is now the RFU’s official version of the game for primary school children.”

Parish Church School beat Blyton-cum-Laughton 3-1, and drew 3-3 with Scotter, who won 4-1 against Blyton.

But Parish teacher John Anderson was delighted that his young charges finished on the same number of points as the eventual winners Scotter.

“Our children have improved so much in such a short space of time, running towards spaces not faces and passing more accurately.”

“We wish Scotter all the best in the next round.”

Pupil Lewis Bell really enjoyed the games.

He said: “I play lots of football and it was good to try a different sport, it is such a fast game.”

Matches were played over 14 minutes, with a two-minute half-time interval.

Three points were awarded for a win, two for a draw and one for a defeat, and tries separated teams on level points.
