Sport to be had

As reported in last week’s column the coastal scene is absolutely on fire and local anglers have been making the most of the large shoals of whiting with the occasional cod thrown in.

Jack Wilson and Brian Fox of Stanley Street S&S made the trip last Wednesday to Stalingbrough on the south side of the Humber estuary and were rewarded with hectic sport.

It was a similar story for St Joseph’s ACs Graham Cashmore and Roger who fished Hornsea north beach later in the week.

As you can see from this week’s photo, the Sandhill predator crew are also enjoying some cracking sport on the pond, and we have also had confirmed reports of large pike being taken from the Fossdyke just east of Saxilby.

Worksop and DAA cadets have been practicing winter match tactics on the Chesterfield canal at Clayworth, employing bloodworm and joker.

Leading the way was Mathew Fores Donnelly who took 2lb 15oz, closely followed by Elliot Marris and Joshua Harte who weighed 1lb 14oz and 1lb respectively.

Cadet coach Doreen Butt is on the lookout for fresh talent, so if there are any youngsters who would like the chance to learn more about our sport or hone their match skills, call 01909 770546.

There is still some great sport to be had, particularly as the Torksey Arm is now open to Worksop book holders and day tickets are also available on the bank.

Ken Bradshaw reports that it is fishing extremely well, with good nets of skimmers, roach and perch falling to a variety of methods with match weights running to 16lb.

The day ticket cost for non book holders is a very reasonable £3, with an extra £1 per rod charge to predator hunters.

CLUB RESULTS

THE members of Grafton AA competed their last club match of the year on the Pine Lakes at Thorne, where the mainstay of the nets were ide.

Steve Ordidge landed 26lb 6oz to claim victory using pole fished maggot with George Aidy Serrling second taking 22lb 14oz and Charlie Benson third with 21lb 4oz, including a last gasp carp of 10lb 4oz.

COMMERCIAL ROUND-UP

OVER at Riverside fishery Mick Hall is proving the man to beat, triumphing in Tuesday’s open on peg 10 with 51lb 5oz tempted on pole fished corn or pellet.

John Itchen on peg 6 landed 21lb 6oz on pole and pellet.

On Wednesday John Bleakley claimed victory on peg 12 fishing the feeder with a corn hook bait to weigh 26lb 3oz ahead of Keith Noble on peg 18 who netted 23lb 2oz pole fishing pellet.

Mick Hall kept up his good run of form in Friday’s event this time on peg 20 pole fishing maggot for 28lb 3oz, edging out Dave Evans on peg 36 who pole fished corn for 21lb 11oz.

At Lodge Farm Tuesday’s competition on the Lily Pond saw Reg Turner put together a winning net of 31lb 3oz from peg 74 pole fishing pellet.

Steve Nemass took the runners up position fishing the bubble on peg 32 for 30lb 2oz.

In Wednesday’s over 50s match on the field pond Steve Nemass went one better fishing the bubble again on peg 5 for 58lb 6oz ahead of Mick Simpson who used the same method on peg 4 to amass 39lb 4oz.

On Thursday the open match was fished on the signal pond with Mick Cancliffe pole fishing worm and caster on peg 36 to put together 47lb 13oz, squeezing Andy Hill into second on peg 12 with a level 44lb pole fishing pellet.

Saturday’s open on the lily pond was won by Garry Needham on peg 70 who pole fished maggot for 24lb 11oz.

At Lakeside on the main lake Garry Mumby claimed victory in Wednesday’s open pole fishing pellet on peg 19 for 45lb 11oz which included four carp with the rest skimmers.

Roy hanson won a club match on peg 29a with 43lb of silver fish taken on pole fished maggot and David Vine triumphed in the Sportsmen AC’s club event with 54lb of skimmers caught on pole fished pellet from peg 26.

On the carp lake specimen hunter Mathew Thompkins banked three lumps which included a common of 24lb 12oz from peg 3 on his multiple maggot ring.

On the trout lake Neil Smith slipped his landing net under 13 fish.

His haul was topped by a 10lb rainbow on cats whisker or green Montanna cast on a sinking line.
