The Gainsborough and Morton Striders hosted the popular race, in support of the William Stones Trust and other local worthwhile causes.

In a field of over 560 competitors, there were many debutants from the club’s ‘couch to 5k’ programme, and first time runners from sponsors PING and Kerry.

A club spokesman said: “We’d like to sincerely thank all those who made this year’s event possible.”

“Particular thanks must go to main sponsors PING and Kerry, who helped to lay solid foundations with strong investment in the race, and to all of the volunteers and supporters who made this such a special race.”

Eighteen of the first 50 athletes across the line achieved new personal best times on the fast and flat route, with race winner Andy Ward of Clowne Road Runners setting a new course record in 31.28.

Ward’s exceptional performance, which saw him lead from the off, meant that the eventual result was never in doubt.

But Derby’s Colin Hawkins and Scunthorpe’s Pumlani Bangani produced strong runs to finish second and third in 32.47 and 33.36 respectively.

Whilst Bangani was the only one of last year’s prize winners in the men’s race to stand on the podium again, the ladies’ category saw all new award winners.

Scunthorpe’s Sarah Kemshall took first place with a fine effort and course record of 37.00, followed by Lincoln Wellington’s Natalie Farrow in 37.26 and Kimberworth’s Claire Spencer in 38.48.

First Junior home was the Strider’s very own Jordan Skelly, who achieved a personal best of 36.26 and took home the Junior Cup.

Other results of note include GMS’ Lorna Allison running under 40 minutes for the first time and taking the V35 trophy, and the club’s V40 winner Ruth Wilson following closely behind.

The Striders spokesman added: “The club would also like to thank the residents of Morton, East Stockwith and Walkerith, the Sea Scouts and Gainsborough Air Cadets, the Rotary Club and both Morton Trentside and QEHS for helping to make the event an overwhelming success.”
