Swimming club holds final in-house championships

TRENTON Dolphins Swimming Club held the fourth and final in-house championships of 2007 at the West Lindsey Leisure Centre last Sunday evening.

There was a very good entry from club members especially in the beginner’s half-length event where the girls had to have three heats to determine the fastest swimmer.

The records which the Dolphin members have created over the last 28 years are of such a high standard that a present member has to be in top form during the evening to have a chance of recording a new fastest time in any of the events.

However, one record was broken on the evening when nine-year-old Aaron Smith entered the record books for the 50m butterfly.

The old time had been set in 2001 and Aaron beat that six-year-old mark by a clear one-and-a-half seconds. In a 50m swim that is a large time difference - probably a metre in distance.

Only one record but lots of personal best times were achieved. It seems as if a contest against a fellow training partner is the catalyst for outstanding effort.

Many of the mums and dads of the present Dolphin swimmers were once members themselves and several were looking keenly at the cups to see if they could find their name and date of winning!

The Lincolnshire Age Group Championships, which are held at Grantham annually in March, are competitions for each age group in all strokes over most distances.

There are strict entry times for competing in these age groups so these in-house championships gave the Dolphin swimmers a chance to achieve those entry times.

The presentation of all the trophies and medals were made by Trenton Dolphins club president Clifford Haw and his wife June (both very loyal founder members of the club).
