Swimming star inspires students

PARALYMPIC swimming star Charlotte Henshaw inspired sport mad pupils at Dinnington Comprehensive, at the school’s annual awards night.

The sports presentation was held last Thursday, and European record holder Henshaw was guest of honour.

Students were awarded certificates for attending extra-curricular clubs (bronze, silver and gold) and school colours were dished out to students who have performed in their chosen sports at regional and above levels.

The Penny Wainwright Award for endeavour went to Chloe Adshead.

Sports Leader of the Year went to Jessica Inglis and the Gavin Elliott Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and fair play was shared by Megan Wright and Peter French.

PE teacher Dana Abdulkarim paid tribute to Henshaw for investing in the students at the awards night.

She told the Guardian: “Charlotte gave a really inspiring speech and was fantastic with the students, staying for a good hour after the close for photos and letting the students wear her World and European titles.”

“It was a terrific night and a raffle and bun sale made over £300 towards the sports tour fund for the Canada trip in July 2012.”
