Tarr Babies coming of age in cup

This year’s final was to be fought out between DTH Redlands Tarr Babies of Division Three and Zygabytes who had come runners-up in Division One.

Zygabytes were always going to win every game on the night, and it would come down to how many points they could restrict the Tarr Babies to before the handicap points were added at the end.

All three Zygabytes players in Dean Brookes, Joe Zygadlo and Bob Hume scored maximum points with special mention to Brookes who only dropped 36 in total whilst scoring the maximum 126.

With the Zygabytes trio racking up the points it was up to the Tarr Babies to try and pinch as many as possible to add to their handicap points.

Alan Keeling, Lewis Comley and Matthew Mudd all battled bravely with Mudd the pick of the bunch chipping in with 55 points out of a total 130 scored on the night.

Before the sealed envelope containing the handicap points was opened the scores were Zygabytes 378 Tarr Babies 130.

The envelope was opened and revealed that the Tarr Babies had been awarded 285 handicap points which meant they were crowned Handicap Shield Champions by a score line of 415-378.

Another final played out this week was the league’s pairs competition the Carnation Cup.

Both pairings of Tom McIntosh and Clive Eden and Sarah Short and Dave Rix had both battled their way to the final and had both been involved in some close matches in the previous rounds.

The final was to be no different.

First game of the night saw McIntosh comfortably beat Rix, but Short soon levelled at 1-1 with a win over Eden.

The next game was the pivotal doubles rubber which often proves to be the deciding factor in the Handicap Shield matches and so it proved to be as Short and Rix managed to just edge a close game to take a 2-1 lead.

Eden hit back in the next in defeating Rix which left the match tantalisingly poised at two games each, which meant the winners would be decided in the final match of the night.

Short beat McIntosh in straight sets for her and Rix to take this year’s CarnationCup.
