TENNIS: Courts kept busy at Horncastle club

Horncastle Tennis Club has had another very busy week with lots of activity on the courts in Coronation Walk.

Monday morning was tots time with a visit from Treetops Nursery. The young children loved the huge space to run around in and enjoyed some fun activities, led by the coaches, to help with their agility, balance and coordination.

The regular club night on Tuesday evening – free to members – was so busy, players had to use the practice wall while waiting to play.

On Saturday, both the 9U and 14U Aegon teams had home matches so again court space was at full capacity.

The 9U team this week were Poppy Pearson, George Hunter, Ellie-May Anderson and Charlotte Eagles. They proved too strong for Sleaford and won all 10 matches.

The 14U boys team had to fight hard for their win against Bourne. Ross Armstrong and Ben Tyrrell both won their singles matches but Alexander Armstrong and Jake Taylor lost theirs. Jake fought a long match and narrowly lost in a 10-8 tie-break.

The doubles matches also went one all so the match would be decided by a doubles tie-break shoot-out. Cousins Ross and Alexander Armstrong rose to the challenge and won 10-6, securing the victory for Horncastle.

On Sunday, the 8U Aegon team travelled to Sleaford for their first match. This week’s team of Jessica Frick, Sophie Munks, Charlie Giles and Katherine Hunter played four singles matches apiece and won them all, recording a 16-0 win for Horncastle.

The Men’s Aegon team played away at Boston and the team of Karl Sutton, Matthew Dalton, Alden Midmer and Carl Pogson all won their singles, and Matthew and Alden won their doubles too, so another good win for Horncastle.

The ladies’ Seniors team played host to Grantham on Sunday afternoon but the opposition proved too strong on this occasion and the team of Julie Smith and Yvonne Thomas and Jayne Dyas and Sue Winter lost the match.

With most of the existing coaching groups running at capacity, another new daytime beginner ladies’ group will be starting soon. If anyone is interested in learning to play or dusting off that rusty racket, get in touch via the club website or on Facebook.
