TENNIS: Horncastle club selected for Davis Cup Trophy Tour

Horncastle Tennis Club this week announced that they have been chosen as one of only 50 clubs in the country to host The Davis Cup Trophy Tour.

Following last year’s momentous win by the Great Britain team, the Lawn Tennis Association is arranging a nationwide tour of the cup, giving the public probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the huge cup up close and personal. The Davis Cup – the World Cup of tennis – is one of the largest cups in sport, standing almost a metre high.

All LTA-registered tennis clubs were given the opportunity to bid for a visit and Horncastle was chosen to represent Lincolnshire clubs.

The Davis Cup will be at the club on Saturday, September 24, from 2pm to 8pm. Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy free tennis and coaching during the day and have their photo taken with the trophy.

The club have also been celebrating the start of the 2016 Davis Cup campaign at the weekend. Whilst team GB took on Japan in Birmingham, the club’s Saturday morning children enjoyed a team competition with Jamie’s team coming out on top. Prizes and certificates were provided by the LTA.

Head coach at Horncastle Tennis Club, Karl Sutton, has also been successful in his application to become one of Davis Cup captain Leon Smith’s Davis Cup Legacy Coaches.

This LTA initiative has chosen just 1,000 coaches across the country to be specially trained by Leon and his team to deliver free coaching to schoolchildren during the summer.

The coaching team has also been nominated for Lincolnshire Coaching Team of the Year which will be announced at the Lincs LTA Awards evening in Lincoln next week.

There could be more exciting times at Horncastle Tennis Club as they begin the process of applying for grants and funding to provide indoor tennis courts to take this thriving club further forward.
