Top 10 at Players for Lee

Lee Westwood’s seven under par performance at the Players Championship was enough for a top 10 finish at the weekend.

The 40-year-old from Worksop began well at Sawgrass, finishing the first day in joint sixth after shooting a three under par 69.

Describing a ‘frustrating’ first round he said: “I shot three‑under and birdied three of the last four holes, but played really well the first 14 holes and it was quite frustrating out there.”

“I missed a couple of good chances.”

Starting early on Friday, Westwood moved up the leaderboard with a fine round of 66, sharing third place ahead of the weekend’s play.

But things didn’t go so smoothly on Saturday, the former Valley student hurting his hand when his club hit a tree on the opening hole, leading to a double bogey.

Thunderstorms causes a suspension in play, meaning Westwood had three holes left to play on Sunday before commencing his final round.

He finished two over for round three with a 74, and started Sunday’s round alongside Australian Marc Leishman on seven under par.

The duo both carded rounds of 72 to tie for eighth place.

The golfer is back in action next week, on home soil, at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, Surrey.
