Last week’s major, the first of 2013, saw the former Worksop resident take a share of eighth place, with his three under par score of 285.

Australia’s Adam Scott took the famous green jacket, after tying for first place with Angel Cabrera and winning in a play-off.

Westwood, who turns 40 next week, was delighted with his putting and short game – so often what has cost him in major tournaments – but not so pleased with how he played on the longer holes.

He said: “I played all right this week, putted really nicely.”

“Short game was good, as well.”

“I don’t think I’ve had a three‑putt all week, which is quite an achievement on this golf course.”

“Just didn’t play the par fives well enough.”

“You’ve got to do your scoring on the par fives.”

A two under par first round and a one under par round on day two had Westwood in good shape going into the weekend.

Although on Saturday he was one over, he still felt the final day presented a massive opportunity to go on and claim his first ever major.

But a couple of putts slid by the hole at a time when he could have used some momentum.

He explained: “I had a chance to get off to a really hot start and get right into it and missed from sort of 15 feet at the first, and then had four feet for eagle on two, a good chance on five, birdied seven and didn’t birdie eight from the middle of the fairway.”

“I could have been five, six under through eight holes and in with a real shot.”

Florida based Westwood was joined at Augusta by parents John and Trisha last week, with the latter performing caddie duties in Wednesday’s par three competition.

“Dad’s done it and children have done it, so it was mum’s turn,” said the former world number one golfer.

Next up for Westwood is the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina on 2nd May.
