Torch startsepic journey

ON Tuesday the Bassetlaw Games torch began a journey that will take in 64 schools, 100 miles and 13,000 school kids between now and June.

A brainwave of Worksop Harriers chairman Peter Fendley, the torch relay is to visit every school in Bassetlaw, and started its epic trek on Tuesday at Outwood Academy Portland.

The torch, carried by Fendley himself, was greeted by a spectacular launch event, with former Olympic cyclist Bryan Steel in attendance.

Holy Family School, Worksop College and Ryton Park Primary were also due to have the torch this week.

Fendley said the relay was designed to include all the district’s children in the Games campaign.

“The Games started with an idea from MP John Mann, and the thought occurred to me that if we’re going to make it happen we have to get the young people of the area involved. We’re visting 13,000 students, and it all started on a perfect day,” he said.

“We’re very thankful to Laing O’Rourke for sponsoring, and A1 Housing who are doing the support vehicle work.”

The relay will take four months and cover over 100 miles on its journey around Bassetlaw, finishing at Worksop Town Hall on 22nd June. Anyone wishing to get involved with the torch relay should visit www.worksopharriers.co.uk
