Tough tests for tennis duo

Boston Tennis Club’s Will Cheer and Alice Gamman were involved in the LTA Youth National Series 16 and under events.

This series of youth matchplay competitions took place across the country over the last few weeks to provide opportunities for some of Britain’s best juniors to return to competitive action.

The events followed on from the successful recent series of behind closed doors events for elite players staged at the LTA’s National Tennis Centre, and saw over 500 juniors compete across six age groups, with the competitions being staged over three weeks at five regional venues – Nottingham, Repton, Aldershot, Millfield and Corby.

The series featured players from across various stages of the LTA Player Pathway, including those training at local and regional player development centres and the national academies, as well as players supported by the LTA’s National Age Group and the Men’s and Women’s Programmes.

Alice played in the girls’ under 16s singles in the National series at Nottingham and, although she lost out 7-6, 6-3, it was a terrific match lasting 2 hrs 20 mins. It was a rather tough but no-doubt valuable re-introduction to competitive tennis for Alice.

Gabriella Lindley, Alice’s opposition, continued right up to the semi-final stages.

Will similarly lost in his first round in the company of some tough opposition and likewise, as in the case of Alice’s opposition, the boy that he lost to continued through up to the semi-final stage.
