It provided more than 5,000 recreational triathletes with a unique opportunity to compete on the same course as the world’s best – including home-grown heroes Ali and Jonny Brownlee who achieved gold and silver in their last event on home soil before Rio.

The Olympic distance triathlon started in waves with a 1500m swim in Roundhay Park’s Waterloo Lake, followed by a technical bike course over 41.5km through the outskirts of Leeds, before completing the event with a 10km run to finish in Millennium Square in the city centre. The event was watched by thousands of spectators, both in attendance and on TV.

The triathletes from Tri3 Sleaford were Debbie Carleton, Simon Jackson, June Jackson, Kerri Shore, Steve Nutley, Ellie Pocock, Michael Higgins, Paul Crooks, Mark Holman, Mark Davies, Phillipa Hill, Dean Marshall, Will Hatcher, Derek Jones, Kenton Jones, and not least Sandy Telfer who achieved a fantastic seventh place in his age category.

A further four triathletes from the club (Kate Prosser, Adam Thompson, Mark Armstrong and Nikki Cooper) took on the Ironman 70.3 in Staffordshire, which consisted of a 1.2-mile swim in Chasewater reservoir, a 56-mile bike course through the countryside outside Lichfield, Burton-upon-Trent, and Cannock Chase, and a 13.1-mile run around the historic Shugborough country estate, former ancestral home of Lord Lichfield.

Participation in these events followed months of dedicated training and preparation, and showcased Tri3 Sleaford’s triathletes at their very best.

The club’s second Aquathon (400m swim/5km run) will be taking place on Monday at Sleaford Leisure Centre – registration starts at 6.15pm and is open to all from age eight. For more information, visit their Facebook page: Tri3 Sleaford Triathlon Club
