Two brilliant birdies, but Coupland finishes day one at The Open one over par

The Bostonian, who is attached to Woodhall Spa Golf Club, began in confident mood at Royal Troon, hitting a birdie on the par-four second hole.

The 30-year-old remained on -1 until carding consecutive bogeys on the 14th and 15th.

A second birdie on the par-three 17th was a welcome response.

However, he finished his day on +1 after a bogey on the 18th, carding a round of 72.

He will tee off tomorrow at 4,05pm, keen to make the cut.
