Rita Proctor’s team were odds-on favourites to dispose of Carol Booth’s team, who sat third from bottom in the table. But they crashed to a 5-1 (four shots) reverse after conceding fives in two bad ends.

Of that pursuing pack, Bob Baines’s team appeared to the biggest threat, but they also lost, plunging to a 6-0 whitewash against Keith Clark’s team, who duly climbed back into second place. The first two sets were close, finishing 4-3 and 5-3, but the last ended 8-0. Geoff Gray’s team also moved into title contention after a 6-0 (19 shots) thrashing of Norman Jones’s bottom-of-the-table outfit. They remain ten points behind but have two games in hand.

In the Monday Triples League, Pat Flegg’s team saw their slim championship hopes dashed when losing 20-8 to Brenda Taylor’s team. The leaders are still Ian Chappell’s team after a close-fought 14-10 win against Marjorie Ward’s team, and victory in their last two games will guarantee the title.

The Friday Mixed Triples League saw Brenda Allen’s team close on the leaders with a 16-9 win over Ian Chappell’s team, while Audrey Rogers’ team hammered Andrew Sheardown’s team 25-8. In the Thursday handicap knockout, the league champions showed their class when Geoff Gray and Phillip Pearson gave eight shots to Freda and Jim Allsopp but still won 15-14 to qualify for the final.
