Worksop repel Raiders fightback

WORKSOP held off a late fightback from rivals Retford in the first ever competitive clash between the two Bassetlaw basketball clubs.

The Sheffield Basketball Division Two encounter went in Worksop’s favour by a 57-52 scoreline.

It was a typical first game of the season with numerous errors from both sides.

Worksop led from start to finish but failed repeatedly to take the game beyond Retford’s reach.

Adam Drabble netted Worksop’s first points with a neat spin and shot in the second minute.

More points from Steve Lawes and Jamie Clarke helped Worksop lead 10-4 at the first break.

The second period was an even affair, but Luke Richardson hit three jumpers in a row to stretch Worksop’s lead in the third.

Three quick threes reduced the defecit to as little as five points in a frenetic final few minutes, but Worksop held on to take the bragging rights.

Worksop coach Steve Lawes said: “It was a relief to come away with the win after a disappointing display by our standards. Retford will certainly see the return fixture in December as winnable so we have got some hard work ahead.”
