Covid lockdown puts paid to traditional firework displays around Sleaford

The new covid lockdown restrictions have put paid to most organised bonfire night events and fire services are advising people to extra careful if they choose to invest in a home display.

Normally there are major firework events at RAF Cranwell, Woodland Waters in Ancaster, Sleaford Town FC and Sleaford Rugby Club but none opted to hold an event ahead of the lockdown which came into force on November 5.

These are major fundraisers for the clubs and other local organisations who put on entertainment and stalls.

The firework event at the rugby club is normally a grand affair with stalls, music and a bar adding to the atmosphere.

Heavy rainfall threatened the event last year which saw reduced numbers as a result and waterlogging of the field. This time a club spokesman for the organisers said: “The increase in costs and not being able to hold a normal event in the current climate was too much of a financial risk.

“With there being a full lockdown now as it would have been this Saturday it would not go ahead anyway.

“It is a shame as like all clubs these nights do help generate funds to improve facilities for everyone and we can’t put a good display on for the community.”

They hoped to be back to normal next year.
