Students send messages of festive cheer to isolated care homes

After being inspired by an education magazine, classes at Ruskington campus decided to work with local care homes to brighten their days and ease the loneliness of missing loved ones unable to visit this Decemberin an initiative called Classrooms to Care Homes.

Principal Laranya Taylor explained: “We all know that this year has been hard, but it has been particularly difficult for care home residents and we would like to ensure we’re doing our bit for the community. Our students have done an incredible job with creating Christmas cards, games and decorations for the local care home residents and their creativity has shone through – we are immensely proud of the time and care they’ve put into their creations and we hope they’ll bring some smiles to people’s faces.”

Well over 100 letters and cards were posted in the box for the school to send, particularly from years 7 and 8 as well as art work, poems, puzzles and sewn items.

Students on the Sleaford Campus also recorded Christmas carols by a fireplace to send to care homes.

At Sleaford campus, the talented Sixth Form musicians performed Christmas songs on the last Monday of term outside, to accompany year groups doing their usual handwashing at the end of each break.

They also travelled to Ruskington to perform the same songs.

Not only that, they also played for six socially distanced Christmas assemblies for years 7 and 8.

On Friday, December 11, music groups from Ruskington and Sleaford Campus streamed a live music concert into every tutor group.

On the last day of term, the music department also released a surprise festive recording of the piece Christmas Eve/Sarajevo, featuring staff and students, appearing on Facebook, inviting social media ‘likes’ and ‘views’.

They are trying to beat their total of 6,000 likes for the ‘Lovely Day’ collaboration they released during the first lockdown.
