Three handcrafted glass lanterns inspired by the beauty of churches along North Kesteven’s Spires and Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail have gone on display in St Denys’ Church, Sleaford.

The project began in 2010, when artsNK brought together a small community group to use kiln formed and stained glass techniques. The project, Glassumimass, is derived from the medium (glass) plus the words ‘illumination’ and ‘mass’, in reference to the churches.

They were unveiled on Saturday at St Denys’ Church and will remain on public display until November 20.

Marion Sander, artsNK Visual Arts Development Co-ordinator explained: “All the participants involved in the glass group have worked really hard over the last six years to develop their skills and learn new techniques, which are displayed in the wonderful glass lanterns they have created.

“The inspiration for the lanterns came from the architecture and stained glass windows of the beautiful churches along the Spires and Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail, so it is fitting to launch the project in St Denys’, Sleaford, and we look forward to seeing the ‘Glassumis’ on display in more churches along the Spires and Steeples trail next year.”

Rev Philip Johnson, Vicar of Sleaford was delighted to have the exhibition. He said: “I didn’t see them until they arrived to be built up, but one or two just strike you as so original and imaginative. One has taken inspiration from the old west window folly around the back of our church. They have made a broken window with ivy growing through it. I would be very happy to have them here longer.”
