Rory Macdonald will conduct the world class ensemble on this very special night, as Jonathan Scott takes charge of the City Hall’s historic organ.

The Hallé and Rory Macdonald will begin with Beethoven’s Leonora No 3, one of the four overtures Beethoven composed for his only opera Fidelio. The work contains quotations from the opera itself and conveys in miniature its overall progression from darkness to light.

And the light of Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian Symphony’ No 4 is most certainly a warm sunny glow. Bursting with optimism, it culminates with a frenzied saltarello.

Finally, Saint-Saëns’ ‘Organ Symphony’ No 3 is one of the grandest orchestral works ever written but it is one with fascinating textures and memorable tunes.
