Not too late: The year I took my life back

At 55, I was facing a quiet reality that many people accept without question: slowing down, living with pain, and putting my health down to “just getting older.”

High cholesterol. Arthritis in my knees. Low energy. It wasn’t a crisis but it was a direction.

And the truth is, it had been building for 25 years. When I stopped playing sport, started a family, and focused on everything and everyone else, my own health gradually slipped out of focus. The weight crept on, and with it came habits that felt easier to keep than to challenge.

I didn’t ignore it completely. I tried four times, in fact joining slimming groups, each time determined it would be different. But I never reached my goal. Eventually, I started to believe something many people do: that maybe this is just how life turns out.

But something changed at 55.

It wasn’t dramatic. No sudden breakthrough. Just a decision clear and firm that I wasn’t ready to settle.

So I made myself a promise: I would lose 56 pounds by my 56th birthday.

Not someday. Not “when life calms down.” One year.

This time, I joined a Slimming World group again but with a completely different mindset. Looking back now, joining that group was essential to my success. The support, accountability, encouragement, and shared experiences kept me focused, especially on the difficult weeks when motivation could easily have disappeared.

I followed the Slimming World healthy eating plan, and something surprising happened: at no stage was I hungry. That changed everything for me. For years, I had associated weight loss with restriction and deprivation, but this felt realistic and sustainable. I was still enjoying food, still cooking meals I loved, but I was learning how to eat better and live better.

What made the real difference, though, was consistency. No shortcuts, no magic solutions just daily choices that slowly became habits.

It wasn’t easy. Some days felt slow. Some days felt like I was getting nowhere. But I kept going, because I stopped focusing on perfection and started focusing on progress.

And that changed everything.

A year later, I kept my promise.

Today, I am pain-free. My cholesterol is back within a healthy range. But more importantly, I feel like myself again.

I have energy. Real energy. I enjoy food not as something restrictive, but something nourishing. I eat seven to ten portions of fruit and vegetables every day, and I’ve even started growing my own vegetables. What once felt like effort now feels like part of who I am.

This journey didn’t just change my body it changed my mindset.

It taught me that it is never too late to take control. That small, consistent actions are more powerful than short bursts of motivation. That support matters. And that the story we tell ourselves about what’s possible can shape the direction of our lives.

If you’re waiting for the right time, this is it.

If you think it’s too late, it isn’t.

And if you’re not sure you can do it, neither was I.

But one decision made and followed through can change everything.

I’m proof of that.
