Older villagers put their best foot forward to raise funds for air ambulance

A group of villagers aged between 62 and 101 have raised £2,300 for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance – by each walking a mile a day for a month.

Partially-sighted 88-year-old Pamela Mason, of Heckington, came up with the challenge to get local people out that normally wouldn’t venture beyond their door, suggesting that the over 70s could take it up during June.

The idea grew to include those in their 60s too and Pamela said: “There were about 17 people that got involved but 12 completed it.”

A one mile circuit was mapped out around the village and participants could join at any point near where they lived.

Pamela added: "I originally set a target of £1,000. It was not just the fit and healthy. We had people in their 90s using their walking frames and a 101 year old in a wheelchair.

“We didn’t account for the heatwave, so some did it in the early mornings.”

Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance Volunteer, Andy Coward, visited the walkers at the weekly Mix and Mingle Cafe group on August 20 in Heckington Village Hall to receive the sponsorship proceeds.

He said: "I think it’s amazing. I’m always grateful for all the money people raise.”
