Rising to the challenge: helping prevent suicide in Lincolnshire

A public health officer with Lincolnshire County Council is going the extra distance to support those affected by suicide – by completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Kate Cooper is preparing to run the demanding long-distance route in the Yorkshire Dales, covering around 24 miles and climbing the three peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

She is undertaking this sponsored challenge to mark World Suicide Prevention Day in September, raising funds for grassroots suicide prevention charity BroPro, to increase awareness of suicide prevention.

Bro Pro is dedicated to creating safe, welcoming spaces where men can connect, talk openly, and access support without fear of judgement. Their mission is to reduce isolation, improve mental wellbeing, and encourage men to seek help before reaching crisis point. You can learn more at https://haylincolnshire.co.uk/support/bro-pro-uk/

Kate said: “I’ve seen first-hand both the impact that suicide has on local families and the amazing work our local charities do with those affected. This challenge seemed the ideal way to go that extra mile to support those we work with.

“Over the next few months, I’ll be combining running and CrossFit workouts to build the endurance, strength and resilience required to complete the route safely.

“It’ll be challenging, but it’s for a great cause, and I’d love it if as many people as possible get behind this. You’ll be helping to support vital work that makes a life-changing difference, while also helping to start conversations about suicide, which can save lives.”

Kate will begin and end the route at Horton in Ribblesdale, tackling steep ascents, uneven, rocky paths and sections of boggy terrain. Weather conditions in the area can be unpredictable, so Kate will need to be prepared for wind, rain, and reduced visibility, even in summer months.

The challenge will require sustained physical effort over six to nine hours, testing both endurance and mental resilience.

- Bro Pro UK is a registered men's mental health and wellbeing charity dedicated to creating safe, welcoming spaces where men can connect, talk openly, and access support without fear of judgement. Their mission is to reduce isolation, improve mental wellbeing, and encourage men to seek help before reaching crisis point.

Operating across Lincolnshire, Bro Pro UK delivers regular peer support groups, wellbeing activities, community events, and outreach initiatives that provide men with a sense of belonging and purpose. Every session is built around the belief that conversation, connection, and community can change and save lives.

Groups are open to all men aged 18 and over, regardless of their background or circumstances. Whether someone is experiencing poor mental health, loneliness, bereavement, unemployment, relationship difficulties, or simply wants to meet like-minded people, Bro Pro UK offers a supportive environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Alongside weekly support groups, they work collaboratively with NHS services, local authorities, charities, community organisations, and businesses to improve access to mental health support, reduce stigma, and strengthen communities across the county. Through these partnerships, they are able to signpost individuals to specialist services while providing peer support.

Fundraising plays a vital role in enabling Bro Pro UK to continue and expand its work. Every donation helps provide free support sessions, develop new community projects, train volunteers, and reach more men who may otherwise struggle in silence.
