It makes the gallery of pub signs on this page nostalgic in two ways, not just because they date from 1970, but also because it reminds us of a way of life which is currently on hold. Some pubs are still here, others closed many years ago ...

The Rum Puncheon, in Market Place. A puncheon is a large cask - a pair of pirates appear to be enjoying one on the pub sign. Picture: JPIMedia
2.
The Rum Puncheon would go on to become Martha’s Vineyard and, later, the Stump and Candle. Picture: Google Photo: Midlands

The Falcon, in New Street, has also disappeared from the town. Its space in New Street is now used by Argos. However, the ornate arm which once carried its pub sign remains (seen here looking towards Strait Bargate, rather than away from it as in 1970). Picture: JPIMedia/Google Photo: Midlands

The Mason Arms was based in Silver Street, part of Boston which has changed greatly due to the Pescod Square Shopping Centre. 1970 was also the year Oldrids was re-built, which appears to be under way in the background. Picture: JPIMedia/Google Photo: Midlands
