No 4 Wood Street - Perfect presentation at Mansfield restaurant

MANSFIELD’S No. 4 Wood Street is well-regarded in the town for its fresh take on British dishes and it stands out on the restaurant scene as somewhere to go for a special treat.

Set in a 200-year-old traditional stone building, the interior is sympathetic to its heritage while also being clean and modern.

When we visited last week, the welcome we received from the front of house staff was warm and friendly and we were immediately asked if we wanted to order drinks.

The menu had a good range of meat, fish and veggie dishes which were all reasonably priced.

We waited a little longer than I would have liked before we were seated at our table though I have waited longer at other places.

Shortly after sitting down, we were presented with an amuse bouche which was a nice touch but by this time I was looking forward to my meal.

What stood out was the impeccable presentation of dishes, My starter, a salmon rillette with crisped root vegetables was beautifully laid out on a piece of black slate and I couldn’t fault the delicate flavour.

I plumped for another fish dish for the main, a piece of red mullet with tomatoes, wilted greens and delicate leaves strewn artfully across the plate.

Again, the presentation was perfect and the flavours were good. My only criticism - and this seems to be happening more and more in restaurants - is that the dish was too salty.

The dessert menu also has a good selection, with various ports, dessert wines and coffees also on offer, and we decided to share a dark chocolate mousse with whipped cream. The mousse was wonderfully dark however, I did find it a bit heavy particularly at the end of a meal.

With two bottle of water the bill came to £54 which reflected the time and effort that had gone into creating the dishes, although it also means it is somewhere to go for a treat rather than every day.
