A question of quizzing for Isle Lions

Organised by the Isle of Axholme Lions member Peter Lindley, the event was held at Haxey Memorial Hall.

More than 100 quiz hopefuls in 14 teams attended, and faced a wide range of questions, set by ace quizmaster, Lion Terry Condliff.

Supper was a posh ploughman’s, followed by home made desserts, all prepared and served by the Isle of Axholme Supporters Group of Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

The total raised from the quiz, bar and raffle was £1,150.

“This was a fantastic result”, said Mr Lindley.

“Isle folk are just so supportive. They understand that Lindsey Lodge provides a hugely valuable service, but also has to raise most of the funds.”

The winning team were The Quizzicals who collected a case of six bottles of wine for their well deserved prize.

Lions President, Graham Guest, was keen to thank everyone who attended, and the many individuals and local businesses who gave raffle prizes or supported in any way.

He said: “In the end we are dependent on the good will of people to help us do our job.

“It never ceases to amaze me how generous the people of the Isle are. Thank you all very much.”

Overall winners of the event were the Quizzicals team.

Thanks were given to the ladies from Lindsey Lodge Hospice who volunteered their time to supply, prepare and serve the lunch.

* What is the Lions Club? In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world.

Jones’ group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed.

After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organisational meeting was held. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the “Association of Lions Clubs”, and a national convention was held. Within three years, Lions became an international organisation.
