Creswell: Couple celebrate 60 diamond years

A Creswell couple have recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary after 60 years of happy marriage.

Peter and Maureen Booker, of Elmton Road, raised a toast on Thursday 5th March with family and friends.

The husband and wife say the secret to a long relationship is ‘happiness’ and ‘not having any worries’.

Peter, 82, used to be a professional singer and was in the RAF and Maureen was a factory worker in Worksop.

“The first place I took Maureen was Cranwell Aerodrome which is where the RAF was based,” Peter said.

“They asked me to compare the shows and then sing.”

“She opened the dressing room door and there I was with eight dancers ready to perform!”

The pair were together for four years before marrying in 1955 and went on to have a son, David, and daughter, Amanda. They now four grandchildren and two great-greatchildren.

The couple received a telegram from the Queen and celebrated by treating their family to a meal in Clowne and went to the Comrades Club in Creswell the following night to play bingo.

“We took the whole family out and had a great evening with the grandchildren,” Peter said.

“We have had a fantastic life together.”

“We were very proud to receive the telegram.”

“We hope for many more years together.”

Peter and Maureen have a caravan in Skegness and stay there a couple of times a year.

“Maureen also plays golf with me sometimes,” Peter said.

“The first time I took her to play golf I turned my back for a second and someone had sold her a pair of gold clubs!”

Maureen said: “The secret is being content, happiness and not having any worries.”
