Motorists in Boston are facing ‘significant delays’ due to a broken-down freight train leaving a railway crossing impassable, Lincolnshire Police has reported.
A short time ago, a spokesman for the force said: “We received a call at 4.30pm today (Friday, November 21) to report that barriers at the crossing near the town’s railway station were down.
“Sluice Bridge is believed to be passable, but Sleaford Road is completely blocked, John Adams Way gridlocked and traffic is backed up to Fishtoft.”
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, police added.
East Midlands Railway, however, is reporting a points failure at Boston. Points, also called switches or turnouts, are devices that let trains move from one track to another at junctions.
This is disrupting its trains on the Nottingham/Grantham/Skegness route.
It says Network Rail is on site investigating the problem.
The disruption is expected to end at 6.30pm, it says.
