The Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time this year, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.

It is being held from Friday-Sunday, March 3-5, and NKDC is encouraging groups and individuals wantingt to help clear up litter in streets and parks.

Anyone who wants to take part can contact the authority for some special Great British Spring Clean bags.

Coun Richard Wright, executive board member for Street Scene, said: “This is a great initiative and we hope lots of people in the community will take part. Even if you can only spare a few hours it can really make a difference so please get involved.”

TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support as an ambassador to the national campaign, which is backed by anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

Steve said: “Litter dropped in a British street is a horror show for wildlife, so I’m supporting Keep Britain Tidy.”

Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up including the Women’s Institute, the National Trust and the RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses.

Litter remains a huge problem, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils spending millions on street cleaning. It costs Sleaford Town Council £70,000 a year to sweep the streets of litter and dog mess.
