Fight to save village pool makes waves with £2k from council

Volunteers have been handed futher hope in their bid to keep Metheringham Swimming Pool open.

Fears were that the pool would have to close due to a lack of money, and the parish council stated it would beunable to allocate the funds needed to keep the pool going.

Now the parish council has agreed to donate start-up costs up to a value of £2,000 and residents have started a ‘Crowdfunding’ campaign to help cover costs.

While the money from the council doesn’t cover the on-going costs for the future of the pool, including refurbishment and maintenance, it does mean the pool will be able to open again this year, provisionally planned for July 2nd.

Volunteer Pool Manager Kathy Mandall said: “While it will be a shorter season, it does mean we can at least open this year. The yearly costs to keep the pool open are around £20,000 a year. Last year we took in £15,000 but had to pay out £28,000.

“I understand the council is having to make cut-backs and that the pool is not counted as a priority.

“The village hall is at crisis point and there is lighting to think about and the roads.

“But people are coming forward with ideas to help keep the pool going.”
