Firm signs the pledge for fair funerals

Funeral poverty exists when the cost of a funeral is beyond a person’s ability to pay and P Cowley Funeral Service of Burton Road, Heckington, has signed up to the Fair Funerals pledge to help tackle this problem.

Peter Cowley, Funeral Director at Heckignton firm P Cowley Funeral Service says: “We have signed the pledge because we recognise that funerals can be expensive and we aim to tailor our funerals to the budget of the client. We feel that by being open and transparent with our costs it gives the client a better understanding of what is involved and this will enable them to make an informed choice before they even start to arrange a funeral.”

According to figures provided by the campaign the cost of dying has risen ten times faster than the cost of living while state grants for those on low incomes has dwindled.

The Fair Funerals pledge has been launched by anti-poverty charity Quaker Social Action. QSA run Down to Earth, a project supporting people on low incomes to cover the cost of a funeral. Their Fair Funerals campaign is working with government, charities and the funeral industry to tackle the growing problem of funeral poverty.
